Director of Master ICFP : Giulio BIROLI

The International Centre for Fundamental Physics and its interfaces (ICFP) offers an English-speaking two-year master’s program in Physics.

Partner universities

Courses are jointly organized with the following universities and institutions:

  • Sorbonne Université
  • Université de Paris (previously Paris Diderot)
  • Université Paris-Saclay
  • Institut Polytechnique de Paris in Year 2 (previously Ecole Polytechnique)

Curriculum

The curriculum provides a thorough understanding of the theoretical and experimental basis of Fundamental Physics. Its broad spectrum includes statistical physics, high energy physics, atomic physics, condensed matter physics, astrophysics and physics for biology.

Program

The program is spread over two years and 120 ECTS, requesting full-time studies. It is also possible to join the program directly in Year 2. The academic year is divided into two semesters:

  • course activities during the first semester (30 ECTS) for both Year 1 and 2
  • second semester dedicated to:
    • an internship in France or abroad, for Year 1
    • short research internship and optional courses, for Year 2

Content

Year 1 consists in an in-depth introduction to modern physics, particularly in statistical physics, quantum mechanics and relativity. It includes a mandatory research internship, often performed in a foreign laboratory. This internship represents a genuine research work, with a first scientific publication.
Year 2 offers a specialization through four programs:

  • Theoretical Physics
  • Quantum Physics: from fundamentals to quantum technologies
  • Soft matter and biological physics
  • Condensed Matter Physics

Assessment

Written examinations conclude each semester.

ENS Physics Department awards a Master’s degree, equivalent to a Master of Science and giving access to doctoral studies.
