Faculty : Paul Windey

ECTS credits : 3

Language of instruction : English

Description :
The course will be concerned with topological aspects of quantum field theory, mainly anomalies and magnetic monopoles.
Most of the following topics will be covered (in an order still to be decided):
- Chiral, gauge and gravitational anomalies: calculations, meaning and some of their applications (U(1) problem, ’t Hooft matching condition,...)
- Mathematical aspects of anomalies (characteristic classes, Atiyah-Singer index)
- Dirac monopole and monopoles as topological solitons
If time permits we may examine some topics in condensed matter where topological
consideration play an important rôle.
