Some 20 years ago, the Ising model was proposed as a physical model for perception of segmented images by S. and D. Geman.
In recent years, the statistics of large databases of natural images of the world have been studied and this has led to the more general idea that a random image of the world, i.e. the output of a digital camera f(i,j) (defined on a lattice of pixels), is a sort of lattice field to which ideas of statistical mechanics may be applied.
I will report on some of this work from both the experimental and the analytic sides.
