Description :

We discuss selected tools to deal with problems in field theory. Basic knowledge of the latter is required, either the course on “Statistical Field Theory”, or “Relativistic Field Theory”. While most applications are chosen for simplicity from Statistical Mechanics, the tools used to analyze them are more generally applicable. Topics are

• Large orders in perturbation theory, instantons, Padé and Borel resummation

• Operator product expansion; polymers and their mapping to φ4-theory, self-avoiding manifolds

• Langevin dynamics: Martin-Siggia-Rose formalism. Fluctuation-dissipation theorem. Barrier Crossing (Arrhenius law).

• Disordered elastic systems: metastability, non-analyticity of the effective action; functional RG and non-perturbative RG; avalanches and their resummation via instantons

• Modeling of stochastic processes. Reaction-diffusion systems. Sandpiles, and their relation to disordered elastic systems.
