Description

These lectures can be seen both as an introduction to the field of Soft Matter Physics, and as a course on Industrial Physics. Indeed, the objects in Soft Matter are often inspired by real life and applications, and people generally succeeded in making new materials before understanding how they work. A shaving foam is relevant example of this kind, where mixing cleverly two phases as fluid as air and water produces a quasi-solid. In the shaving foam, interfaces (between water and air) play a key role, as in most systems in Soft Matter, and we shall discuss first the concept of surface tension before looking at some of the numerous consequences of this concept. The course will be based on key experiments, that we’ll show and analyze, and we’ll often use for this analysis scaling laws, one of the favorite tools of Soft Matter physicists.
