Description

Compulsory course

The aim of this course is to provide an introduction to condensed matter physics from the point of view of electronic properties and structure of crystalline matter. It will describe both equilibrium and out-of-equilibrium properties of solids. The lectures will be supplemented by examples from recent research to emphasize the development of this field, especially in the field of nanoscience.

  1. Free electron model and beyond (crystal Hamiltonian, electronic and lattice degrees of freedom)
  2. Crystal structure: structure, reciprocal lattice
  3. Excitations of the lattice: phonons, thermal properties
  4. Electronic structure: electrons in a periodic potential, Fermi surface, energy bands
  5. Transport properties of the electronic gas
  6. Semiconductors, Metals: fundamental electronic structure and properties.
  7. Elementary excitations: plasmons, polaritons, excitons
  8. Superconductivity and Magnetism : phenomenology and basic concepts.
  9. Crystal growth : statistical physics at the nanoscales
