During the last years it has become possible to load atomic Bose-Einstein condensates into artificial periodic potentials formed by laser light. Such Bose-Einstein condensates in periodic potentials - so called optical lattices - have proven to be powerful systems for exploring fundamental questions in condensed matter physics, quantum information processing, quantum optics as well as atomic and molecular physics.
In my presentation, I will give an introduction to the field and discuss recent experimental highlights achieved by our group.
