Ergodicity : an historical perspective. Equilibrium and Nonequilibrium.

Giovanni Gallavotti (Sapienza, Rome) — February 18, 2016

A view on the physical meaning of the so called ergodic hypothesis : its role on the foundations of equilibrium statistical mechanics in the ’850’s, interpretations, and its modern influence in nonequilibrium statistical mechanics.

Biography :
Giovanni Gallavotti is professor emeritus at the Sapienza University in Roma. He is a member of the Italian "Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei". He received the Boltzmann Medal awarded by IUPAP- International Union of Pure and Applied Physics, for his contributions to equilibrium and non-equilibrium statistical physics, including phase coexistence and the development of a constructive renormalization group for quantum field theory, dynamical systems and condensed matter.
