The ENS Physics department has a dual role of teaching and research. It also provides the technical resources for laboratories (mechanical workshop, helium liquefier, clean room, computer network, logistics, warehouses) as well as administrative support.
Composed of 460 people including 120 researchers/teacher-researchers, the Physics department is the largest research and teaching structure in the ENS.
It occupies 12,000 m² a historic building on rue Lhomond, on the ENS campus in Paris, 2,000 m² on the Jussieu campus and a few buildings at the Collège de France.
Since 2011, the department has been certified ’laboratory of excellence’ for the quality of its research and teaching (Future investments - Labex call for projects).

Staff from the design office and the workshop provides technical assistance to design and built custom instrumentation. Pieces are realised in close coordination with the research groups to meet faculty needs.
Considerable technical expertise is to be underlined, as the capacity to weld down to 0.2 mm, and to conceive and realize extremely complex pieces, in particular cryostats.

The workshop is staffed with technicians from the department, one technician from LPA and three technicians from LKB. The welding shop is staffed with one assistant engineer from the department. Four engineers constitute the design office. One engineer, head of the group, manages the complex workflow of the entire platform.
Workshop equipment comprises several CNC machining centers and a number of conventional machining mills, lathes, and drills etc. Welding material includes welding plasma micro TIG for low-thickness parts (0.2mm), two TIG welding stations, and two oxy acetylene welding stations.
The design office works in an integrated Catia (CAD/CAM) and MasterCam (CAM) environment and is strongly involved with finite-element modeling using Comsol software. Its state-of-the-art large-format printers are used throughout the department.
