Description

The goal of this lecture is to introduce superconductivity through historical or recent experiments as well as the necessary theoretical concepts.

The oral exam consists of a a 20 to 30 minutes presentation of a research article.

Outline of the course

A – Introduction to superconductivity

Introduction, phenomenology, thermodynamics, Meissner effect
Isotopic effect, BCS hamiltonian
Cooper pair problem, BCS Ansatz
BCS theory T=0 and T>0
Mean-field approach, Bogoliubov transformation
Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations, proximity effect

B – Mesoscopic superconductivity

Normal-Insulator-Superconductor (NIS) junctions, quasiparticles and Andreev currents
Hybrid junctions Normal-Superconductor (NS), ballistic and diffusive regimes
Superconducting junctions and Andreev bound states : SIS and SNS junctions
Superconducting grains and small junctions, charging effects
