Claudius Ptolemy, in the second century C.E.,
ascribes to the earth a size that was significantly
smaller than that determined by Eratosthenes four
centuries earlier. A search for the origin of this drastic,
strange shrinking of the world has led to unexpected
discoveries. A statistical analysis of the longitudes
reported in Ptolemy’s Geography proves that at the
root of Ptolemy’s error lies a misunderstanding of geographical
coordinates, going back to Hipparchus, for
places in the Americas whose existence was not even
suspected in imperial times.
